Who Said Wellness Is Not Fun? Discover this Evangelist’s Unexpected Journey: Evangelist Yvonne Pointer-McCreary
Yvonne’s life took an unexpected turn two years ago in December 2022. She got married. Over the two years she has settled happily into married life. It turns out her husband, Jerry, likes going to the gym to do his workout. She never did. Her life as a minister, nonprofit executive director, author, host of a popular weekly Facebook live show, Hope Haven, grandmother, speaker and friend to many, keeps her very busy. With that schedule she knows she has to feel well in order to complete all that she wants and must do. Yet, she never made the time to exercise – not even walking. She was content to drink lots of soft drinks and eat good food. But Jerry found a gym to join and became a regular visitor at the gym – three days a week. Yvonne decided to make an effort to spend more time with Jerry doing what he liked which was going to the gym. So, Yvonne told him she would go with him to the gym two times weekly. This new and different activity for Yvonne has been nothing short of miraculous! She had no workout clothes or sneakers. She wore her street clothes and a hat. Even wore her minister rope on the treadmill a time or two. She has discovered how much she enjoys going to the gym with Jerry. When they get there, he goes in his direction to do his workout. She goes in her direction to the treadmill and the track. She now is seeing people who are there, despite their advanced age, use of a walker or slow pace going around the track. They are there! Now, she is beginning to nod at people she sees regularly on the track. That nod leads to saying, hello and then actually speaking and getting to know people. With this group there is shared interest – moving and working at fitness – no matter what level. So, for Yvonne working out did not become part of her routine because a doctor told her to work out or due to some health issue. Fitness came to her because of a relationship. No matter how one gets to fitness and wellness is irrelevant. It is the fact that one starts from where they are – no frills or fancy workout clothes. The result for Yvonne is she noticed she feels better, moves better, eats a little less, is drinking more water, and thinks some clothes are fitting better! Think back to the 1980’s, when people only had to choose between Perrier and Evian water for bottled water. Now, there are so many choices and decisions to make around water your head can spin in the grocery store isle – there is alkaline, enhanced with fruit essence, flavored, vitamin infused, distilled, carbonated. All different bottle shapes too! There is also just tap water as well. Then what the water should be transported in requires thought and decision as well. Is it better to put the water in metal, glass or plastic water bottles when out and about? Should it have a hook or not to put on a bike or backpack? In any event, the most important thing is to just drink water! Don’t let all of these decisions make you avoid water.
